Welcome

28th April 2009: It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Evans, a founding member of WEMSI Europe. John's wisdom and wit will be sadly missed. A full obituary is here.

WEMSI-Europe exists to improve pre-hospital care in remote locations. We are committed to the research, training and delivery of wilderness and rescue medicine.

We were recently featured on the BBC: Watch the clip >>

Research

If you are looking for information about aspects of wilderness care then you need to head to the Alpine Meadows. This site is where WEMSI-Europe gathers research papers and other documents, as well as our comments on emerging research.

Training

Two elements make us unique. All our faculty are practitioners as well as trainers. Secondly our trainers are volunteers and give their time for free.

Delivery

Our international training faculty provides three levels of training:
  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
  • Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) and
  • Wilderness Physician (WP).

We run a number of these courses a years whilst also providing programmes tailored to specific groups e.g. rescue teams, military units and expeditions.

Development

One of our goals is to develop trainers and training faculties. We do this though long term relationships with organisations who are committed to developing in-house training solutions.

Disclaimer
The opinions expressed here are simply that, opinions. Wilderness Medicine is a diverse and complicated field. Add to that the fact that the wilderness environment itself is so varied and it becomes obvious that following literally what is written here would be foolhardy at best and dangerous at worst. You should have good patient assessment skills and medical and envrionmental knowledge and skills before you can appraise how anything written here can be applied in a particular situation. Attending one of WEMSI-Europe's courses goes a long way to getting you to that place but even then, you use skills and apply knowledge at your own risk and on your own recognisance. We are not responsible for the accuracy or applicability of any information on this website. You should verify independently, to your own satisfaction, anything that we present.
